    Theorem

    Let σ\sigma be an invertible ergodic measure-preserving transformation of a nonatomic standard probability space (Ω,μ)(\Omega, \mu). For ω∈Ω\omega \in \Omega and j∈Nj \in \mathbb{N} write Ij(ω)={σiω:−j≤i≤j}I_j(\omega) = \{\sigma^i \omega : -j \le i \le j\} for the orbit window of radius jj.

    Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0, and let j1,j2,…:Ω→Nj_1, j_2, \ldots : \Omega \to \mathbb{N} be measurable with jk(ω)→∞j_k(\omega) \to \infty for every ω\omega. Then there are a measurable set AA and a measurable j:Ω→Nj : \Omega \to \mathbb{N} such that

    • for every ω∈A\omega \in A, j(ω)=jk(ω)j(\omega) = j_k(\omega) for some kk;
    • the windows Ij(ω)(ω)I_{j(\omega)}(\omega), ω∈A\omega \in A, are pairwise disjoint;
    • μ(⋃ω∈AIj(ω)(ω))>1−ε\mu\bigl(\bigcup_{\omega \in A} I_{j(\omega)}(\omega)\bigr) > 1 - \varepsilon.

    This is a form of Rudolph's backward Vitali lemma (Rudolph 1990, Theorem 3.9).
