    Theorem

    The underlying simple graph of a pattern FF with bipartition A⊎BA \uplus B has vertex set A⊎BA \uplus B, with a∈Aa \in A and b∈Bb \in B adjacent if F(a,b)>0F(a, b) > 0. A pattern FF belongs to a class F\mathcal{F} of finite simple graphs if its underlying simple graph does. For a graph GG, let γ(G)=∑v∈V(G)2deg⁡G(v)−1\gamma(G) = \sum_{v \in V(G)} 2^{\deg_G(v) - 1}, the number of vertices of a CFI graph of GG.

Let K\mathbb{K} be a field of characteristic zero. Let F\mathcal{F} be a class of finite simple graphs that contains K1K_1, is minor-closed, and is closed under weak oddomorphisms. Let G∉FG \notin \mathcal{F} be a connected graph, let FF be a pattern whose underlying simple graph contains GG as a minor, and let N≥γ(G)N \geq \gamma(G). Then hom⁡F,N\hom_{F,N} is not a linear combination of homomorphism polynomials hom⁡F′,N\hom_{F',N} of patterns F′∈FF' \in \mathcal{F}.

The proof distinguishes hom⁡F,N\hom_{F,N} from all hom⁡F′,N\hom_{F',N} with F′∈FF' \in \mathcal{F} by evaluating at the bi-adjacency matrices of two bipartite graphs with NN vertices on either side, obtained from the two CFI graphs of GG by replacing the non-edges of GG with complete bipartite graphs between the gadgets, passing to the bipartite double cover with a perfect matching added, and padding with isolated vertices.

---
The *underlying simple graph* of a pattern FF with bipartition A⊎BA \uplus B has vertex set
A⊎BA \uplus B, with a∈Aa \in A and b∈Bb \in B adjacent if F(a,b)>0F(a, b) > 0. A pattern FF belongs to
a class F\mathcal{F} of finite simple graphs if its underlying simple graph does. For a graph
GG, let γ(G)=∑v∈V(G)2deg⁡G(v)−1\gamma(G) = \sum_{v \in V(G)} 2^{\deg_G(v) - 1}, the number of vertices of a CFI
graph of GG.

Let K\mathbb{K} be a field of characteristic zero. Let F\mathcal{F} be a class of finite
simple graphs that contains K1K_1, is minor-closed, and is closed under weak oddomorphisms.
Let G∉FG \notin \mathcal{F} be a connected graph, let FF be a pattern whose underlying simple
graph contains GG as a minor, and let N≥γ(G)N \geq \gamma(G). Then hom⁡F,N\hom_{F,N} is not a linear
combination of homomorphism polynomials hom⁡F′,N\hom_{F',N} of patterns F′∈FF' \in \mathcal{F}.

The proof distinguishes hom⁡F,N\hom_{F,N} from all hom⁡F′,N\hom_{F',N} with F′∈FF' \in \mathcal{F} by
evaluating at the bi-adjacency matrices of two bipartite graphs with NN vertices on either
side, obtained from the two CFI graphs of GG by replacing the non-edges of GG with complete
bipartite graphs between the gadgets, passing to the bipartite double cover with a perfect
matching added, and padding with isolated vertices.
